Discussing anesthesia before surgery

Though many prospective patients do their research before undergoing a tummy tuck procedure, one area that often goes overlooked is anesthesia. Though it is arguably the most important part of surgery, the general public may not know that much about it, and there are several things you should ask about anesthesia before you go under the knife.

Regardless of where you are getting surgery, whether it be in the United States or Costa Rica, you should be aware of who will be administering the anesthesia and what he or she will be doing, the Miami Herald reports. This includes being sure the facility has all the appropriate equipment including an oximeter, brain wave monitor and suctioning equipment. Be certain the facility has resuscitation and EKG materials as well.

Of course, being familiar with the facility is not the only important aspect of anesthesia. There are also some questions you should ask prior to the surgery, according to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA).

Aside from discussing what type of anesthesia is best, you should also ask if there are any certain foods or beverage you should hold off on consuming in the days leading up to surgery. Other topics for discussion include any medication you're taking and what impact it may have on the procedure.
