Whether you're considering a tummy tuck procedure or liposuction, visiting a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon is a must, and a recent story out of New York City illustrates why. Earlier this week a woman from the Bronx was sentenced to one year in prison for performing illegal cosmetic enhancements out of her home, the New York Daily News reports.
Whalesca Castillo had been charging upwards of $1,500 for butt lifts with illegal injections. Authorities were alerted in 2010 after one of her patients filed a complaint. She claimed to have experienced pain, shortness of breath and even fainted after the procedure. Another former patient reported having her injections leak after the procedure.
"What she did is a public health hazard," prosecutor Sarah Lai told the court, according to the newspaper. "People have died from this conduct."
There are a number of steps prospective patients should take when looking for the right doctor. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, you should look at their board certification along with the facilities accreditation. Additionally, talking to the surgeon's other patients and checking their experience with your particular procedure are important.
