The desire to look good is not exclusive to the United States. Millions of people across the globe go under the knife for cosmetic procedures from Botox to tummy tucks, and a recent survey from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery revealed which countries perform the highest number of plastic surgeries.
Drawing on statistics from 2010, the U.S. is at the top of the list, leading the way with highest number of total surgeries performed – nearly 1,621,000. Close behind was Brazil, which was followed by China, Japan and India. While the top three remained unchanged from 2009, Japan cracked the top five, switching places with Italy.
While it may not surprise anyone that the U.S. has the largest number of surgeries, things become a little more interesting if you look at the statistics from a per captia perspective. Based on population, the U.S. only ranks sixth, while China and India are not even in the top 10. Meanwhile, South Korea, Greece and Italy vaulted into the top three spots, respectively.
The results also shined a light on some differences between countries on what surgeries are performed. For instance, while the United States leads the way in the total number of breast implant and tummy tuck procedures, Brazil has the greatest number of eyelid surgeries and nose jobs.
Regardless of what surgery you choose, you can't ignore the importance of doing ample research before the procedure. That way, you can come to a consultation with your surgeon prepared with questions to make sure your procedure goes smoothly and your expectations can be met.
