For those looking to remove excess skin that's often associated with weight loss or pregnancy, a tummy tuck procedure is one of the best surgical options. So it should come as no surprise that plastic surgeons are noticing a slight increase in the number of tummy tucks they've been performing since January.
Although not applicable to nationwide trends, one Atlanta-based plastic surgeon has seen a significant uptick in tummy tucks. During the first six months of 2012, he says there have been around 50 percent more procedures than normal. He has also noticed an increase in the number of liposuction requests.
"Liposuction is a short outpatient procedure using mild anesthesia with minimal downtime and discomfort," he said. "The lesser discomfort paired with the outstanding results my patients see may explain why the procedure has gained so much popularity."
The high level of satisfaction with tummy tucks and liposuction is largely responsible for its growth in popularity. A recent study published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery pointed to statistics that showed 88 percent of patients are satisfied while 85.8 percent have improved self esteem as a result.
